How to study Applied Mathematics — Semester IV, Pokhara University BECE
What it covers
Advanced mathematics for engineering applications: complex analysis, the Z-transform, Fourier series and Fourier transform, and partial differential equations.
Topics worth extra time
- Laplace transforms and their use in solving differential equations
- Fourier series and Fourier transforms
- Z-transforms
- Complex variables: analytic functions and contour integration
- Partial differential equations and their solutions
How to study it
Keep a table of standard transform pairs and properties, and practise until you can apply them without looking. Work through solved examples of each type, then attempt mixed problems so you learn to choose the right method.
In the exam
State the property or theorem you use at each step. Long problems earn partial marks for correct method, so never leave a question blank.
