How to study Basic Electrical Engineering — Semester I, Pokhara University BECE
What it covers
Fundamentals of electrical circuits: circuit elements and network theorems, DC and AC circuit analysis, single-phase and three-phase systems, magnetic circuits, and an introduction to transformers and electrical machines.
Topics worth extra time
- Ohm’s and Kirchhoff’s laws, mesh and nodal analysis
- Network theorems: Thevenin, Norton, superposition and maximum power transfer
- AC fundamentals: phasors, impedance, RLC circuits, power and power factor
- Three-phase systems: star and delta connections, line and phase quantities
- Magnetic circuits and the working principle of transformers
How to study it
This is a numerical subject. Learn each theorem through a worked example, then solve several variations: different sources, different loads, dependent sources. Phasor diagrams make AC circuits much easier to reason about, so draw one for every AC problem until it becomes a habit.
In the exam
Draw a neat circuit diagram for every numerical answer, mark directions of current and polarity, and carry units through the working. Theory questions usually ask you to state, explain and prove a theorem, so learn the statements precisely.
