How to study Computer Networks — Semester VI, Pokhara University BECE
What it covers
How computer networks work: layered network models, addressing and subnetting, routing algorithms and protocols, transport protocols, network management and security, and server configuration.
Topics worth extra time
- The OSI and TCP/IP models
- Data link layer: framing, error control, flow control and MAC protocols
- Network layer: IP addressing, subnetting and routing algorithms
- Transport layer: TCP, UDP and congestion control
- Application layer protocols: DNS, HTTP, email and others
How to study it
Practise subnetting until it is quick, since it appears everywhere. Trace routing algorithms on small networks. Using Wireshark or Packet Tracer to see real packets makes the layers concrete.
In the exam
Subnetting and routing questions need complete, tabulated working. Draw protocol diagrams and header formats neatly.
