How to study Electronic Devices & Circuits — Semester I, Pokhara University BECE

What it covers

Semiconductor devices and the circuits built from them: diodes and their applications, bipolar and field-effect transistors, biasing and amplifiers, operational amplifiers, and power supply circuits.

Topics worth extra time

  1. Semiconductor physics and the PN junction diode
  2. Diode applications: rectifiers, filters, clippers, clampers and Zener regulators
  3. BJT configurations, biasing and stability
  4. Small-signal models and amplifier analysis
  5. FET and MOSFET operation, and operational amplifier basics

How to study it

Understand each device through its characteristic curves first, then move to circuits. For biasing and amplifier problems, follow the same order every time: DC analysis for the operating point, then the AC small-signal model. Building the circuits in the lab makes the theory far easier to remember.

In the exam

Draw clear circuit diagrams and characteristic curves, and show the operating point on load lines. Numerical answers need units and a short comment on what the result means.
