How to study Instrumentation — Semester II, Pokhara University BECE

What it covers

Electrical and electronic measurement: measuring instruments and errors, transducers and sensors, signal conditioning, data conversion (ADC/DAC), oscilloscopes, and recording and display devices.

Topics worth extra time

  1. Measurement errors, accuracy, precision and calibration
  2. Analog and digital measuring instruments
  3. Transducers and sensors for temperature, pressure, displacement and strain
  4. Signal conditioning: amplifiers, bridges and filters
  5. Data conversion (ADC and DAC) and data acquisition systems

How to study it

Organise transducers in a table: what they measure, their principle of operation, advantages and limitations. For bridges and converters, work through the derivation once and then solve numericals. Relate each instrument to the lab equipment you have used.

In the exam

Block diagrams and labelled sketches of instruments are expected in most answers. Comparison questions (for example, types of ADC) are easier with a prepared table.
