How to study Probability & Statistics — Semester V, Pokhara University BECE
What it covers
Probability and statistics for engineers: probability rules, random variables and distributions, sampling, estimation, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression.
Topics worth extra time
- Descriptive statistics, and probability with conditional probability and Bayes’ theorem
- Random variables and their distributions: binomial, Poisson and normal
- Sampling distributions and estimation
- Hypothesis testing: z, t, chi-square and F tests
- Correlation and regression
How to study it
Practise many problems and learn to recognise which distribution or test a question describes. Keep a summary sheet of formulas, conditions for using each test, and how to read the statistical tables.
In the exam
For hypothesis tests, write the null and alternative hypotheses, the test statistic, the critical value and a conclusion in words. Present calculations neatly in tables.
